Generally speaking 0 5 inches for your gutter margin is recommended for most books. Depending on the size of the book the gutter can be anywhere from 1 4 1 2. Page width for all pages should now be 9 11 inches. Sometimes a rule is used instead of blank space. If acrobat adds an offset value move that back to 0. Gutter width can take up 1 4 to 1 2 from the page therefore there must be an extra 1 4 1 2 of safety margin space on the side of the page where the gutter spine will be.

When laying out pages gutters should not be so narrow that columns run together. A gutter margin can smaller for books with less curve and larger for books with more curve. The example below shows the appropriate use of gutter for the text along the top left and bottom edges of the design. An example of a perfect bound book gutter can be seen below.
